On 21 – 24 December 2009, MCMEF conducted an environmental awareness program for students and young professionals at the eco-ashram.
Attendees included students from different disciplines, research fellows and environmental educators.
The camp aimed at spreading environmental awareness amongst students and young professionals through discussions and interaction with qualified and experienced professionals in this area including:
|
 |
|
• Professor Vinod Rishi, a former director of the Indira Gandhi Forest Academy, who provided an inspiring account of his work protecting India’s forests and wildlife;
• Dr R. K. Khanna spoke about the dangers and implications of global warming;
• Mr. Gagan Matta discussed practical methods for water conservation;
• Dr Joshi discussed the health hazards and diseases that can be caused by various types of pollution; |

Mr. Naresh Sharma, an environmental sciences specialist, convened a discussion amongst the participants about various personal and community initiatives that can be adopted for environmental conservation.
Other discussions during the eco-camp centred on topics such as at-source waste minimization; reducing waste; eco-friendly development models, and managing plastic waste. Participants discussed ways in which these concepts can be implemented at home, at educational institutions, and at the village level. |
|
Participants were encouraged to form local NGO’s or associations dedicated to spreading awareness in their respective towns or villages about environment protection. |
|
Short films and documentaries about the dangers of plastic, glacial melting, Ganga pollution and global warming were shown to the participants.
These screenings were followed by group discussions about how to assimilate, implement and spread the messages contained in these documentaries.
In all, the camp was both educative and informative and served to inspire participants to individually strive towards environment protection and conservation, and the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment for generations to come.
